چکیده

We outline a framework of multilevel neurocognitive mechanisms that 1 incorporates representation and computation.We argue that paradigmatic explanations 2 in cognitive neuroscience fit this framework and thus that cognitive neuroscience con3 stitutes a revolutionary break from traditional cognitive science. Whereas traditional 4 cognitive scientific explanations were supposed to be distinct and autonomous from 5 mechanistic explanations, neurocognitive explanations aim to be mechanistic through 6 and through. Neurocognitive explanations aim to integrate computational and repre7 sentational functions and structures across multiple levels of organization in order to 8 explain cognition. To a large extent, practicing cognitive neuroscientists have already 9 accepted this shift, but philosophical theory has not fully acknowledged and appre10 ciated its significance. As a result, the explanatory framework underlying cognitive 11 neuroscience has remained largely implicit. We explicate this framework and demon12 strate its contrast with previous approaches. 13
